Floating nuclear power in the South China Sea

The broad experience that Valmont SM has accumulated through years of manufacturing different types of steel structures for various industries, gives strong competencies and capabilities to take a product from conception to ultimate series production for customers. Experience from coal conveying is now utilized in supporting Power Plants shifting to green fuel such as pellets or wood chips.  /

SOENDERJYLLANDS MASKINFABRIK (SM) WAS FOUNDED IN THE LATE 1940S AND WAS OWNED BY THE UTILITY SOENDERJYLLANDS HOEJSPAENDINGSVAERK UNTIL 1998 (NOW ORSTED – THE FORMER DONG ENERGY). IN THE BEGINNING, IT WAS A SERVICE WORKSHOP FOR THE UTILITIES, PRODUCING STEEL CONSTRUCTIONS FOR USE IN POWER PLANTS AND ALSO PRODUCING TRANSMISSION TOWERS. THROUGH THE YEARS, SM GAINED EXPERIENCE IN OTHER INDUSTRIES AND DEVELOPED COMPETENCIES IN MATERIAL HANDLING SYSTEMS, PROCESS EQUIPMENT, AND COMPLEX STEEL STRUCTURES FOR LARGER CONSTRUCTIONS.

DS Gruppen acquired Soenderjyllands Maskinfabrik in 1998 and named it DS SM. The acquisition enabled DS Gruppen to start black steel production of wind turbine towers. The first tower production line was ready for use in 1998. Capacity was expanded with a second line in 2000 and a third in 2002. It also had close connections with the energy sector and continued to deliver steel constructions to utilities.

SM started selling to the oil & gas industry in Norway in the mid-1990s. Since then, the industry has grown and global oil & gas suppliers have acquired Norwegian-based companies, resulting in SM now supplying globally.

SM expanded its wind turbine tower production capacity in 2007, with a state-of-the-art wind turbine tower coating facility based on fully-automated robot technology.

In 2014 the company was acquired by ‘Valmont Industries, Inc. Today, Valmont SM has the most advanced and highly automated production facility for producing wind turbine towers and up-to-date production workshops that can handle individual steel constructions with weights of up to 200 tons under roof and up to 600 tons for assembled constructions at the factory.

MATERIAL HANDLING SYSTEM

Handling system for gypsum and limestone. The pipe conveyor is transferring limestone from a coal Power Plant to the gypsum store. In the store, the pipe conveyor discharges the gypsum on a normal reversible-belt conveyor, which places the gypsum in the store.

Valmont SM has longstanding relationships with large global customers, where we are using our know-how and capabilities in manufacturing steel constructions in the most optimal way. Our customers depend on Valmont SM to provide input on how best to manufacture structures. Valmont SM is therefore the chosen partner when customers need to develop new, heavy, complex steel structures and run pilot projects.

The broad experience that Valmont SM has accumulated through years of manufacturing different types of structures for various industries, gives us the strong competencies and capabilities to take a product from conception to ultimate series production for our customers.

Valmont SM co-engineers, manufactures, supplies and installs equipment and complete plants for bulk handling. The component line includes belt conveyors, pipe conveyors, elevators, ship loaders, stackers, roller screens, crushers and hoppers.

For special conditions, Valmont SM supplies chain conveyors and apron conveyors, for example for wet or dry slag or cinders from refuse disposal plant.

Valmont SM also develops and manufactures steel structures for specific tasks, where buildings or building constructions require individual solutions in steel.

Special tasks with specific requirements for size, design, fabrication and surface treatment are where Valmont SM's competencies and assets have led to demanding steel assignments in multi-story buildings, tribune shelters, the roof of Denmark's Opera, as well as many other cultural and entertainment centers.

Valmont SM has advanced production facilities for manufacturing heavy complex steel structures, where the combination of experienced workmanship and modern technology ensures a very high and uniform level of quality. Machining is carried out in-house as an incorporated part of the manufacturing process. The machining workshop is well equipped for small and big structures with high complexity and high demands.

COATING

Featuring state of the art automated robotics, the Valmont SM coating facility at Vaerksvej is designed for tubular items, like wind turbine towers with a diameter of up to 6,5 meters.

Featuring state-of-the-art automated robotics, the Valmont SM coating facility at Vaerksvej is designed and fully dedicated to sandblasting, metallization and coating of wind turbine towers. Section weight up to 200 tons – length 40m – diameter 6.5m. Valmont SM’s Coating Department treats steel surfaces totaling 750,000m² annually.

At the facility in Roedekro, specific jobs within shot blasting, metallization and painting are carried out. This coating facility is focused on the coating of individual constructions and complements the facility at Vaerksvej. Maximum item size is 6m x 6m x 35m. This department handles items weighing up to 250 tons. Coating is carried out manually as most objects are specialized constructions that cannot be coated in automated facilities.

Both facilities can handle specifications for surface treatment subject to the latest requirements and norms within industrial painting, onshore as well as offshore.

CONVEYOR SYSTEM FOR WOOD CHIPS

Dong Energy’s power plant ” Skaerbaekvaerket” is going green in the future and shifting to wood chips. Valmont SM is building the complete new conveyor system for wood chips including storage. As of now we are preparing the system for first fire.
